What a journey it has been. I cannot believe I have managed to produce this EP in such a busy year of university. Revisiting my initial project proposal, I feel that I have achieved everything I set out to do with this project. I have created an EP of improvised harp music and have contributed to challenging stereotypes of the harp. However, my project has developed to so much more than that.
My main outcome of this project is that I now have a strong portfolio as a freelance musician. From having original music released to setting up this website, getting promo photos, a network of supportive creative individuals and a live solo performance set.
Most importantly, I have found my sound. It is something I have always longed for as a musician and completing this project gave me the opportunity and confidence to explore it. This project has made me realise that I've found a way to create music of my own in a way that is truly representative of my musical identity. Although there have been many challenges along the way, it feels so empowering being able to create and produce my own EP as a female musician in this male-dominated industry. I am new to the world of producing but I am having fun navigating it and learning new skills along the way.
Now that my EP has been created, of course I have considered what is next. Without revealing too much, I would love to develop this further as a live solo set and potentially collaborate with dancers.
I'll end this post with a David Bowie quote that I discovered this year. It has spurred me on during times where I doubt myself and has given me confidence in doing the unexpected:
"If you feel safe in the area you're working in, you're not working in the right area. Always go a little further into the water than you feel you're capable of being in. Go a little bit further out of your depth. And when you don't feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you're just about in the right place to do something exciting".
